Disrespect of Derek Carr Borders on Ridiculous
As the 2020 offseason trudges on, the disrespect for the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr borders on the absurd.
The Las Vegas Raiders have the single most passionate fan base in all of the professional sports. Make no mistake that people either love the Silver and Black or hate them. There isn't a wide selection of people who are without an opinion. That is why in a culture of clicks, writing about the Raiders is pure gold.
Now I am not calling out the personal integrity or character of people who call out the Raiders. If they feel that way, so be it. But the latest borders on the absurd.
2019 was not the season Carr had imagined. But when a recent article listed him as the 25th best starting quarterback in the NFL, behind rookies who have never played and questionable competitors, at this point, it is just laughable.
Last season with a makeshift mash unit of injury-riddled players without the best wide receiver in all of football in Antonio Brown who melted down, Derek Carr threw for 21 touchdowns and only eight interceptions.
Despite the box being loaded and defenses coming at him, he fumbled away and lost the ball only three times. Consider these numbers. Not emotion, not click-bait, just raw truth:
- 70.4 Completion Percentage in 2019.
- 100.8 Passer Rating in 2019.
- 7.9 Yards Per Attempt in 2019.
- 4,054 Passing Yards in 2019.
If you like those numbers (and you should), they are all career highs. On a battered team deficient in talent.
Derek Carr has all the weapons he needs in 2020. He has depth around him as he has never had. 2020 is shaping up to be his best campaign ever. Raider bias comes with all the unfounded criticism. Perhaps, but realistic? No way.
The criticism for Carr outside the Raider Nation is not a surprise. But while it comes from a minority in the Raider Nation, they are vocal. Albeit, wrong.
