Raiders NFL Draft Prospect: TE Luke Musgrave, Oregon State

The Las Vegas Raiders are in need of a tight end, and Oregon State Luke Musgrave can be that solution via the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Las Vegas Raiders find themselves with one tight end on the active roster after trading Darren Waller to the New York Giants on Tuesday.

Now the Silver and Black will be searching for his replacement, and an area where the franchise can turn its attention is the loaded tight end class in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Tight End Luke Musgrave, Oregon State

“This is a tall lengthy tight end, who plays a very physical brand of football and he is surprisingly athletic and talented as a pass catcher,” Draft Bible said of Musgrave.

The nephew of former Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave had an up-and-down career in Corvallis.

At 6-6 and 253 pounds, Musgrave was a mismatch in the Pac-12, built with the prototypical size and frame that NFL teams are looking for in tight ends.

Musgrave began his career as a true freshman but took a huge step forward in 2021, when he appeared in 13 games, starting in nine and recording 22 catches for 304 yards (13.8 per) and a touchdown. He also blocked a punt and returned it 27 yards against Utah that season.

Named to the Mackey Award Watch List (top Tight End in the country) at the beginning of the 2022 season, Musgrave started hot and showed everyone why he was named one of the top tight ends in college football.

Musgrave opened the season by recording six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown versus Boise State, and the following week would pick up another five receptions for 80 yards.

However, he would miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

Musgrave would appear at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, where he participated in team meetings and drills, including the 40-yard dash.

The Oregon State product understands blocking assignments, and while he gives it all, he still needs to improve as a blocker, and as he develops, the Raiders can utilize him right away in the passing game.

This year’s draft class is loaded with talent, and the Raiders find themselves in a position to select Waller’s replacement on Day Two of the draft.

The NFL Draft will occur at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., from Thursday, April 27 to Saturday, April 29. ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network will broadcast all seven rounds.

Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
