Raiders Draft Prospect: CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo
The Las Vegas Raiders are looking for young talent in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Senior Bowl begins this week in Mobile, Ala., as players measured in yesterday, and coaches and scouts got to see where players are physically.
The Raiders, under the new Antonio-Pierce-Tom Telesco regime, are looking for young players to help them establish the team they want to be in the next few seasons and beyond.
Under Pierce, the Raiders built a defensive identity driven by a competitive culture he brought to the team midseason. The team is looking for players who will build on that identity.
One of those players could be Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. Mitchell, a two-time First-Team All-MAC member, will showcase his talents at the Senior Bowl, a chance to prove his worth against the top players in the draft, coming from a Group of 5 school.
Mitchell measured six feet tall and 196 pounds, giving him solid size for an NFL corner. That size shows up on the tape as well. He sizes up against big wide receivers and competes against them.
Mitchell finished his Rockets career with 123 total tackles, seven and a half tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a sack, 45 passes defended, and six interceptions. He had 19 pass breakups in 2022 and 18 in 2023.
Mitchell is one of the most athletic cornerbacks in the draft. He made The Athletic reporter Bruce Feldman’s ‘Freaks List’ before the 2023 season as someone with extraordinary athleticism. His rare blend of speed and strength helps him mirror receivers and prevent them from out-muscling him.
Mitchell has impressive technique and quick footwork in coverage. According to Pro Football Focus, he was targeted 62 times and allowed just 27 receptions for 290 yards and no touchdowns in 2023.
As impressive as a cover corner as he is, Mitchell may be even better defending the run. He has a big frame and plays with a high motor, consistently overpowering blocks and delivering hard hits to ball carriers.
Mitchell is a good athlete but is quicker than he is fast. He does not have the speed to stay downfield with some of the league’s faster receivers, which could hurt him at the next level if he cannot recover.
Mitchell is projected to be a late first-round selection but could see his stock rise if he has a good Senior Bowl. His play style fits perfectly with what Pierce and the Raiders want to do, and he could be a star if he continues his development.
From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
