Antonio Pierce Has Raiders Hall of Famer's Vote as Coach
Las Vegas Raiders Interim Coach Antonio Pierce has elevated his chances to remain as head coach for next season since defeating the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday.
While the permanent head coaching role is still to be determined, one of the greatest to ever don the Raiders uniform believes it is Pierce's job to lose.
Raiders Hall of Fame cornerback Charles Woodson pleaded his case for Pierce to stay at the helm when he joined SiriusXM NFL Radio on Wednesday.
"Antonio has done a great job," Woodson said. "Knowing Antonio and knowing his playing days, playing there in New York, I know that Antonio knows what it looks like. He knows that you need to be tough in the trenches, you need to be tough on defense.
"When you're in a game playing against a tough opponent like the Kansas City Chiefs, you've got to limit big plays. And then, you've also got to make some plays as well, which our defense was able to do. But he knows what it looks like.
"And then, he also knows what being a Raider looks like. Him growing up, being a Raiders fan, I get no more joy than watching him after games when he hits that 'Raiders' chant because it's something that I feel like I would do, being a Raider just yelling out 'Raiders.'
"And so, he knows what it looks like. And Mark (Davis) -- he has decisions to make, of course, going forward. I understand that he put a wide net out.
"There are some people that he's looking at. I mean, it's what you're going to do is you're going to start looking at other people's resumes and looking at where they've been, who they've coached under, their track record.
"Well, for Antonio, he's actually got time on task. He's actually putting his resume out there right now -- actually, for the team that needs a coach. And so, I don't think he could have done, right now, a better job than putting his best foot forward being able to get the team, those young men, to buy into him.
"You watch those guys and the way they act around him, the way they go out there and fight on the field for him and for the Raider Nation. I don't think he could have done a better job.
"And to go on the road and beat the Chiefs, beat one of our biggest rivals in the fashion that they did, he's put his stamp on this team.
"And so, yeah, Mark can go out, he can look far and wide, but he's not going to find another Raider who understands what this thing should look like more so than Antonio Pierce. So, I would give him my blessing from what I've seen so far. I think the players have given him his blessing as well, the way they've performed.
"And I would be very happy with Antonio Pierce being the guy going forward."
The Silver and Black continue the season on New Year's Eve versus the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
