Brian Hoyer Is Ready to Help the Raiders in Any Capacity

The Las Vegas Raiders signed Brian Hoyer for the exact situation they find themselves in as they travel to Chicago to play the Bears on Sunday. Will he be declared the starter?
In this story:

The Las Vegas Raiders signed Brian Hoyer as a steadying presence in the quarterback room that featured three new quarterbacks.

With quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo officially being ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears, Hoyer could potentially be named the starter.

This changes nothing for Hoyer, as he says he always prepares as if he is going to play.

"Same preparation as always," Hoyer said. "Part of being in that role, the same way it was going out there on Sunday is, you never know. You always prepare for the best and prepare to help the team any way you can.

"It's not up to me. Whenever I play, I want to play good for myself, my teammates and for the coaches. I've played for 15 years, so whatever the situation is Sunday, I'll be ready to go."

Last week, Hoyer replaced Garoppolo, who left the game because of a back injury. Hoyer played the entire second half and it was the most significant playing time he has had in a while. He passed for over 100 yards in the second half and led the Raiders to a win.

"It was good for me to get back out and actually play some football," Hoyer said. "Other than a few drives in the preseason, the last time I played was last October. I had a good week of preparation. It's always good to get out there against live bullets.

"Nothing ever gets any easier. Every week is its own situation and you try to handle it the best you can. Whatever happens on Sunday, you've just got to be ready.

"Whether it's the first snap, the second half, the fourth quarter, you never know when it's going to be. It's the role I'm here for and, hopefully, I'll do it the best that I can."

Hoyer returns to Soldier Field, where he played for the Bears in 2016, when he threw for 1,445 yards and six touchdowns without an interception in six games for a team went 3-13.

"I had a good year there, unfortunately it ended with an injury," Hoyer said. "I enjoyed my time there and enjoyed playing in that stadium and I'm a Midwest kid. So, going into 50-degree weather sounds good to me."

Hoyer's 15 seasons in the National Football League is a luxury most teams don't have at their disposal. Las Vegas does and could potentially choose to start the veteran, should they feel he gives them the best chance to win.

The Silver and Black will head out on the road to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
