Brian Hoyer Named Starter Sunday Against Chicago Bears
Since quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's injury last week as the Las Vegas Raiders won their second game in a row, the most pressing question has been who will start at quarterback for the Silver and Black.
Coach Josh McDaniels had a decision to make. After a week full of practice and as the Raiders headed to the airport heading to Illinois to face the Chicago Bears, it was announced that they would start veteran Brian Hoyer over rookie Aidan O'Connell.
"I think you just measure it all out and honestly it happens almost every week," McDaniels said. "It's just not necessarily at quarterback. It's kind of I'd say par for the course as a football team. It's just the quarterback position gets a little bit more attention to it.
"I think you, at the end of the day, both of them will be ready to go."
The Raiders have been forced to play all three quarterbacks at differrent points of the season. This has only prepared Las Vegas more should either Hoyer or O'Connell need to play.
"The good thing is we've talked about is both of them have played already, so that's a unique situation," McDaniels said. "So far in six games, we've had three quarterbacks out who have all competed in close games.
"So, I'm confident in both of them."
Hoyer filled in for the injured Garoppolo in the second half of last week's game against the New England Patriots. Hoyer jump-started the offense as Las Vegas moved the ball better than they had all season.
Hoyer has played in almost 80 games and has been in the league for 15 seasons, mainly because of his ability to run an NFL offense.
"It is what it is, whether it's the first play, second half, the last drive of the game, you never know," Hoyer said. "That kind of comes with the territory. So, you let the coaches make the decision."
Despite his experience, Hoyer says he still has butterflies when he hits the field.
"Of course," Hoyer said. "I've been playing football for 15 years and I get nervous even when I don't know if I'm going to play or not. It's not so much nervous, its anxious. Those are good feelings, that means you care, that means you're still in it."
Las Vegas will depend on Hoyer's veteran leadership and experience in the league to get them through at least their game against the Bears and, possibly, beyond.
The Silver and Black will head out on the road to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
