Hoyer Holding Down the Fort at OTAs Without Garoppolo

New Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer's professional experience is proving to be valuable during OTAs.

The Las Vegas Raiders aren't concerned about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's readiness for the 2023-24 season, but it certainly has to feel reassuring to have the depth they do at his position.

With off-season additions like fourth-round pick Aidan O'Connell, veteran signal-caller Brian Hoyer, and returner Chase Garbers, the quarterback room has a wide range of experience.

Of the three backups, Hoyer is the most experienced in Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels' system, as the veteran served three-plus seasons in McDaniels' offense when the two were together in New England.

That and Hoyer's overall experience as a long-time NFL quarterback have been beneficial for the Raiders in OTAs as Garoppolo continues to rehab.

"So I've obviously known Brian for a while, and Brian is a true pro," McDaniels told the media on Thursday. "He really does a great job of understanding his assignment, and also understanding how he may help others. So he's been in a role as a backup quarterback for a number of years, so he understands what the responsibility is in that position and takes full advantage of every opportunity that he has when he has repetitions, and he's getting a lot of them now and able to function in our system.

"Look, their responsibility is to give the other 10 guys an opportunity to do their job well, and Brian does that very well. So, we're excited about what he's doing, and he continues to try to get better even though he's been in the league for a number of years, works very hard at it, takes care of his body and is a great example for our guys. So, we're very pleased with that."

Hoyer played for the Patriots in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022 seasons. He and Garoppolo were never together in New England, yet they share experience as backups to legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

Hoyer signed with the Raiders as a free agent early in April.

McDaniels was New England's offensive coordinator for 13 seasons.
