Telesco Will Bring a Fresh Set of Eyes To the Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders did their due diligence in their searches for a general manager and head coach. After officially making Antonio Pierce their permanent head coach, the Raiders took a few more days to review their general manager options thoroughly.
There were only a few legitimate names at both positions that the Raiders considered before settling on Pierce and new General Manager Tom Telesco.
Telesco joins the Raiders after spending 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. Over time, he brought the Chargers many notable players while overseeing their roster.
While the Chargers had mixed results during his time as their general manager, Telesco did a decent job drafting some of the Chargers' most talented players and showed the ability to make trades to rebuild rosters when necessary.
On top of his experience rebuilding rosters, Telesco has intimate knowledge of a division rival's inner workings, which is invaluable to the Raiders moving forward. The Raiders' new general manager is responsible for the entire makeup of a division opponent's roster. That will surely help Las Vegas moving forward and is a rare occurrence in the National Football League.
Along with his knowledge of the Chargers, he spent 11 seasons competing against the Raiders, twice a year. The Raiders now have an asset that can bring the point of view of a new employee and former opponent, which is also valuable.
As much as former Interim General Manager Champ Kelly had an argument for the permanent position, it is fair to wonder if hiring Telesco was owner Mark Davis' attempt to have a general manager and head coach who are not tied at the hip as the last two general manager and head coach combinations.
If that is the case, it shows Davis can learn from prrvious mistakes to get his franchise back on the right trajectory. Telesco has experience rebuilding rosters much worse than the Las Vegas' current players.
The Raiders were a game or two away from the playoffs this season, so Telesco's new perspective could help Las Vegas compete even more for a playoff spot as soon as next season.
From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
