Raiders Will Face Bagent If Fields Cannot Go

If Chicago Bears starting quarterback Justin Fields cannot play on Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders will face undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent.

The Las Vegas Raiders will face the Chicago Bears this Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago.

The Raiders might not face Bears’ star quarterback, Justin Fields, who injured his throwing hand against the Minnesota Vikings and is considered doubtful for Sunday.

Fields was starting to come into his own in his third season with the Bears, completing nearly 62 percent of his passes for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also is an effective runner, rushing for 237 yards and a touchdown.

With Fields likely to miss Sunday’s game against the Raiders, the Bears will start undrafted rookie backup Tyson Bagent, who replaced Fields last week against the Vikings. He completed 10-of-14 passes for 83 yards, rushed for a touchdown and threw an interception, in addition to losing a fumble that resulted in a Vikings touchdown.

So, who is Tyson Bagent? He played college football at NCAA Division II Shepherd University in West Virginia. He won the Harlon Hill Trophy Award, given to the best player in Division II.

In his career with the Rams, Bagent finished with a 43-10 record as a starter, completing 1,400-of-2,040 passes for 17,034 yards and 159 touchdowns. He holds Shepherd records for most completions, attempts and passing yards, and holds the overall NCAA record for touchdown passes.

Bagent was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and was impressive. He was not selected in the 2023 NFL Draft and signed with the Bears as a free agent.

Bagent looked calm and confident in the game against the Vikings, seemingly not rushed in his first NFL game. At 6-foot-3 and 213 pounds, he has an adequate NFL quarterback frame. His throwing motion is clean, but his footwork looked rushed as he threw from backpedals often.

Now, Bagent is set to make his first NFL start against a Raiders defense that has played well over the last two weeks. Facing Maxx Crosby and Marcus Peters is never easy, even at home.

Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham and the Raiders will look to spoil Bagent’s first start as they go for their third straight victory and hope to get back in the playoff picture in the AFC.

The Silver and Black will head out on the road to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
