Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Dave Ziegler had quite the journey to the NFL.

Ziegler and three-time Pro-Bowl offensive tackle Taylor Lewan had a common background that led to the general manager opening up about his career path when he joined Lewan and former Raider Will Compton's podcast, "Bussin' With The Boys."

Ziegler had been Lewan's guidance counselor at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"Before I got to Chaparral, I had been coaching at the high school level, I was a social studies teacher, and then at one point -- football had always been like No. 1," Ziegler said. "I played all the way through high school, I played in college -- small college -- all that stuff. And then before I got to Chaparral, I wanted to get more into college football, so I GA’d at John Carroll University, which is where I went. I coached receivers there. And then I was there for two years, and then I took a big move up and went to one AA and went to Iona in New Rochelle, New York. I coached wide receivers there, coached special teams. And I was finishing my Master’s degree in counseling."

In 2009, Ziegler said he would be offered a scouting position by his friend, Josh McDaniels, who was in his second season as head coach of the Denver Broncos.

"I didn’t really even know what scouting was about, to be honest with you," Ziegler said. "Like I had been a fan of the NFL, but when you’re growing up, you don’t really know that there’s a scouting department and how it’s all built on the other side."

The rest, of course, is history.
