David Carr Shares Insight on Brother's Situation
The Derek Carr era in Las Vegas is in the rearview mirror.
The Las Vegas Raiders released the Pro Bowl quarterback on Tuesday after nine seasons, and now each party has a new chapter ahead.
Derek Carr's brother David Carr, a former NFL quarterback and NFL analyst for the NFL Network, gave some insight into his brother's final year with the Raiders organization on Tuesday's edition of "NFL Total Access."
"He's been in the dark for a while with the Raiders," David Carr said. "Honestly, that was the hardest part ... over the last couple of weeks. It was a situation where he would have worked out a trade with someone. He would have loved to have been involved in those conversations, but he was never asked to be in those conversations. So I think that was the hardest part for him, is he wanted to make it work, but then at the end, it didn't. They released him, and so now, both parties will go their separate ways.
"And now, he's looking for an opportunity, which is a really unique opportunity as we look at it. It's not something that comes along very often where a Pro Bowl quarterback is free in his early 30s and he has a chance to hand-pick the next team that he goes to. ... He has some criteria that he's looking at that I'm going to help him walk through, but he's a smart guy, he knows what he wants, he's very focused on making the right decision for his family and for his future."
Derek Carr played under six head coaches in his nine seasons with the Silver and Black.
"It's been a tough scenario," David Carr said. "I think the biggest thing for Derek is why it didn't work out with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was excited at the beginning [with] Josh McDaniels. But there was just a difference of opinion as far as how to run offensive football, and how to play offensive football. When you're a veteran quarterback ... you've got veteran guys they want some control at the line of scrimmage; they want to be able to utilize their superpowers.
"And we talk about this all the time: quarterback super power. And Derek's, his favorite quarterback for a long time -- I played against him and lost to him like nine times -- is Peyton Manning. He wants to get to the line, decipher what the defense is doing, get in an appropriate play. And that skill wasn't utilized in Las Vegas under Josh McDaniels. And that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that. And Derek and Josh, they had a good conversation today, they parted ways. Josh is going to do his thing, he'll find a quarterback who fits his system, and Derek will go find a system that fits his style. So it will be good."
