Marcus Epps on Raiders Forcing More Turnovers
The Las Vegas Raiders were one of the busiest teams in free agency, looking to upgrade several elements of their team in hopes of returning to the postseason in 2023.
One area they focused heavily on during free agency was the secondary, and their most significant signing for that position was safety Marcus Epps, who signed a two-year contract with the Raiders after spending four years with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Epps played more than 1,000 snaps for the Eagles last season, posting 94 total tackles, four tackles for losses, a forced fumble and six passes defended.
The Raiders only had 14 total turnovers last season, which was near the bottom of the NFL.
Epps is well aware of the fact the Raiders need to force more turnovers in 2023 in order to win more games. He addressed the media on Wednesday ahead of training camp and spoke about creating more takeaways.
“Honestly, I think a lot of it is a mindset,” Epps said. “It starts with your technique and executing your job, but we got to have that mindset, and I feel like since OTAs that’s something we’ve been trying to establish and working at it every day. So, I like where we’re at right now.”
While Epps did not record an interception last season and had only one forced fumble, he had a career year in 2022 and is looking to maintain that level of play in 2023.
Epps was highly regarded as a free agent for his elite run stopping abilities and high IQ in coverage. He will look to provide stability and leadership to a Raiders’ secondary that is looking for answers.
Forcing turnovers is a sure fire way to get the ball back to the offense and generate more scoring drives. Epps and the Raiders are hoping to help out the Raiders’ offense in this way.
The most important element of a defensive turnaround for the Raiders is creating more takeaways, which is why they went out and got Epps.
The more the Raiders make plays around the ball, the more turnovers they will force, and Epps believes they have the players to do it.
The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
