The Las Vegas Raiders will begin the 2023 NFL regular season this Sunday when they take on the Denver Broncos in Week 1.

The coaching staff battle will be one to watch, seeing whose scheme and game plan comes out on top between Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels and Broncos Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph.

Both coaches have been successful throughout their careers, and they will face each other twice this season. McDaniels will need to figure out how to slow down the Broncos’ aggressive defenders, and Joseph will need to figure out how to limit the Raiders’ elite skill position players and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Joseph addressed the media and spoke about game planning against McDaniels and Garoppolo.

“That’s the challenge, obviously,” Joseph said. “We haven’t seen Jimmy [Garoppolo] play a lot of snaps with the Raiders, but obviously [Coach] Josh [McDaniels] has been a coordinator for a long time. I’ve faced Josh almost 10 times, so that won’t be a problem. What he’s doing with Jimmy G, I don’t know? He started with Josh in New England. I played against those guys when he was there as a young guy. We’ll see. Every year is different, and every offense is different. You do what your players do best. It’s not just Jimmy. You have the runners, you have the receivers, and you have other new guys. We will see what happens on Sunday, but I’m not sure what it is going to look like.”

The addition of Garoppolo gives the Raiders’ offense a new look compared to years past. While he is back in McDaniels’ system, the offense has evolved since Garoppolo was last in it.

This is new for Garoppolo to learn, McDaniels to teach and especially for Joseph to scheme against. While he has gone up against McDaniels before, Joseph does not yet know what the offense is going to look like with Garoppolo back in command.

Both the Raiders’ offense and Broncos’ defense have pieces that each opposing coach will have to be mindful of when creating their game plan. It is going to be a game within the game seeing whose game plan comes out on top.

The Silver and Black open the regular season at the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 4:25 p.m. EDT/1:25 p.m. PDT.
