How Can Raiders Attack Lions' Defense?
The Las Vegas Raiders have been unable to much going offensively this season.
Coach Josh McDaniels’ team is averaging only 16 points per game, third-fewest in the NFL. They are also near the bottom of the NFL in total yards per game and are last in rushing yards per game.
Considering the talent level on the roster and the personnel tailored specifically to McDaniels’ liking, the season's results have been puzzling.
The Raiders must find ways to move the football to avoid losing their second straight game as they travel to Ford Field in Detroit to take on the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football.
The Lions have been playing at a high level defensively this season, as Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn has been able to unlock talent at all three levels of his defense. The Lions boast the No. 2 rushing defense in the league and No. 11 overall defense.
So, how can the Raiders’ offense get it going against this stout Lions’ defense? It starts with slowing down defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. Not many teams have been able to do that this season, so that will be difficult. Hutchinson and Maxx Crosby are tied for the NFL lead in quarterback pressures with 42.
Hutchinson has been one of the most disruptive edge rushers in the league this season, and teams often double-team him to no avail. He will face left tackle Kolton Miller, one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL. Miller must continue to play at a high level to slow down Hutchinson, as offensive success against the Lions starts there.
The Lions’ linebackers have played well this season, but there are ways to beat them. For example, the Raiders could use tight end Michael Mayer more on passes in the short and intermediate field.
The Raiders also have to get Josh Jacobs and the running game going; although that will prove difficult against the Lions’ defense. Las Vegas is running out of time to make that happen. If the Raiders can run the ball, they can set up play action, keeping the defense guessing.
The Raiders must move the ball to defeat the Lions and keep pace in the playoff hunt. While the Lions’ defense is tough, there are ways the Raiders can find success.
The Silver and Black will stay on the road to take on the Detroit Lions on Monday night, Oct. 30, at 8:15 p.m. EDT/5:15 p.m. PDT.
