Raiders One of Only Six Teams to Name Franchise Player
The window for NFL teams to grant their franchise tag has now closed as of today, March 7, at 4 p.m. EST.
The Las Vegas Raiders, who franchise tagged All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs on Monday, were one of six organizations in total to select a franchise player this offseason.
The others were the Baltimore Ravens (quarterback Lamar Jackson), the Dallas Cowboys (RB Tony Pollard), the Jacksonville Jaguars (tight end Evan Engram), the New York Giants (RB Saquon Barkley) and the Washington Commanders (defensive tackle Daron Payne).
Teams can either designate their franchise player as "exclusive" or "non-exclusive."
According to a press release from NFL Communications, "An 'exclusive' franchise player -- not free to sign with another club -- is offered the greater of (i) the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year as of the end of the restricted free agent signing period on April 21; or (ii) the amount of the required tender for a 'non-exclusive' franchise player, as explained below."
All six of the players granted franchise tags this offseason were designated as "non-exclusive."
Franchise players can be signed between 4 p.m. EDT on March 15 (one week from today) and the Tuesday after the 10th week of the 2023 season.
The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.
March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.
The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
