Raiders Fire Defensive Line Coach Frank Okam
Another change was made to the Las Vegas Raiders’ coaching staff on Sunday.
As confirmed with team sources earlier, the club has parted ways with defensive line coach Frank Okam.
Okam was brought on board for only a single season, his third as a coach in the NFL. He held the same title with the Carolina Panthers the season before. The season before that, he joined the Panthers' coaching staff as an assistant D-line coach.
Okam spent the 2018 and 2019 college football seasons as an assistant D-line coach at Baylor University. He and the Bears finished with winning records in both those seasons, including an 11-3 mark for the 2019 campaign.
Okam started coaching at Rice University, where he first served as a graduate assistant. He was then promoted to D-line coach for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Before his coaching days, Okam was a defensive tackle in the NFL for four seasons.
The Houston Texans drafted him in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft, where he played two-plus seasons before being waived during his third NFL season.
Okam would eventually play 12 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was signed by the New York Giants after a veteran tryout in 2013 but would never play another down in an NFL regular season game, having been cut that August.
The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. The NFL Scouting Combine is Feb. 28-March 6, 2023, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. On March 7, 2023, before 4 p.m. EST is the club's deadline to designate Franchise or Transition Players.
March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.
The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
