Raiders' Marcus Epps Led NFL in Performance-Based Pay Distribution

The Las Vegas Raiders' new safety Marcus Epps earned himself some extra money in 2022.

The Las Vegas Raiders signed former Philadelphia Eagles safety Marcus Epps to a two-year, $12-million contract as free agency began earlier this week.

That wasn’t the only money he earned, however. The NFL released its list of top 25 performance-based pay distributions for the 2022 season, and Epps topped that list, earning an extra $880,384.

The payout is calculated by how many snaps a player plays and considers the player’s contract. In Epps’ case, he was still on a rookie contract and played over 1,000 snaps last season, so he earned the highest amount. Raiders free agent safety Duron Harmon was also on the list at No. 25.

Epps had the best season of his career in 2022, starting all 17 games for the Eagles and posting 94 tackles, four tackles for losses, and six pass breakups. He also posted 20 total tackles in the postseason. Epps finished third on the team in tackles.

The Raiders had been looking for safety help as their defensive backfield did not have a great season, and many of their defensive backs are on the free agent market. They got a quality player in Epps at a good price, and he looks to immediately provide help on the back end of Patrick Graham’s defense.

Not only did Epps have an excellent season, but he also outplayed his previous contract and earned himself some extra money. Now, he will look to bring that great play to the Raiders, filling a need and strengthening their secondary as the team upgrades the defensive back room.

The NFL Draft will occur at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., from Thursday, April 27 to Saturday, April 29. ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network will broadcast all seven rounds.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period began at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
