Raiders Free Agent Targets: Jordan Poyer

Star safety Jordan Poyer could be pursued by the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Las Vegas Raiders are likely going to be in the market to add help to their secondary as free agency kicks off this week.

The Raiders have multiple defensive backs, both cornerbacks and safeties, expected to hit the open market, so they will need to add talent to these position groups. The defensive backs they do have under contract are younger and could benefit from some depth and veteran leadership.

One player the team could pursue who would help in both aspects is Buffalo Bills star safety Jordan Poyer, who was a Pro Bowler this past season and was named First-team All-Pro the season before. Let’s take a closer look at Poyer and see if he would be a good fit in the Silver and Black.

Poyer was selected in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles out of Oregon State. He played a season there and then spent a couple years with the Cleveland Browns before catching on in Buffalo.

During his time with the Bills, Poyer has posted 582 tackles, 33 tackles for losses, 10 sacks, 44 pass breakups and 22 interceptions. He has been one of the most underrated safeties in the NFL over the last couple seasons.

As the Raiders look to bolster their secondary, Poyer would be an excellent addition. He is a smart, rangy, ball-hawking safety who can be a defensive communicator, the sort of safety that Patrick Graham covets for his defensive scheme.

Poyer is 31 years old, but is playing the best football of his career, so he will likely command a big contract. Fortunately for General Manager Dave Ziegler, the Raiders have the financial flexibility to offer him what he’s worth.

Jordan Poyer could be someone the Raiders bring in to stabilize their secondary. He might cost a lot of money, but it may be worth it.

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. During that time, starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
