Minshew Is the Right Quarterback to Compete with O'Connell

The Las Vegas Raiders signed Gardner Minshew to compete with Aidan O'Connell for the starting quarterback position. He is just the guy for the task at hand.
In this story:

Everything from trading up in this year's NFL Draft to signing a big-name veteran quarterback to compete with starting quarterback Aidan O'Connell has been suggested for the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason.

From mortgaging the team's future in hopes of landing one of the top quarterbacks available in the draft, to again overpaying for a veteran player past his prime have been thrown out as ideas for the Raiders.

While the Raiders certainly could still trade up in this year's draft, after signing veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew, it looks less and less likely that they will do so.

The Raiders signed Minshew to a two-year deal worth $25 million. Considering what Minshew could provide to the team, that might be a bargain in the long run.

The Raiders have played the offseason perfectly when it comes to the quarterback position. They publicly announced that quarterback Aidan O'Connell would have to compete for the starting position next season while also announcing they wou'd be on the search for a new quarterback to add to the team.

However, Coach Antonio Pierce also publicly supported O'Connell's performance last season and voiced his confidence in O'Connell moving forward. The Raiders announced a quarterback competition without undercutting the current starter, which is tough to do in today's day and age.

By not signing a high profile quarterback, the Raiders saved themselves the money and saved their coaching staff, their team and most importantly, O'Connell from the spectacle of an offseason of debating who would win the competition.

On the field, the Las Vegas has a veteran quarterback who has started in 37 of the 49 games he's played in his career. Minshew has been a serviceable starting quarterback in the league and has also quietly sat the bench behind a quality starting quarterback, which could happen again next season.

The Raiders enter next season with two quarterbacks with the legitimate ability to successfully lead them to victories next season.
