Raiders Re-Sign FB Jakob Johnson
The Las Vegas Raiders have re-signed another one of their own, bringing back fullback Jakob Johnson on a one-year contract, his agents Drew Rosenhaus, and Robert Bailey have confirmed.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the deal. The specifics of the contract have not yet been reported.
A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Johnson returns for his second year in Las Vegas after signing a one-year contract with the Raiders last offseason. He spent the first three years of his NFL career in New England with the Patriots under Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels.
Johnson played tight end and defensive line at the University of Tennessee, posting three career catches for 23 yards and 21 total tackles. He returned to play in Germany after not being selected in the 2018 NFL Draft.
In bringing back Johnson, the Raiders keep a familiar face in the running back room, one who provided crucial blocks in the Raiders’ improved running game. He also caught five passes for 10 yards last season.
Johnson is another player with a prior relationship with McDaniels and General Manager Dave Ziegler, as they have signed multiple players who have previously spent time with those two, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Phillip Dorsett.
As the first few days of free agency have begun, the Raiders have taken the approach of familiarity, and re-signing Jakob Johnson is part of that plan.
The NFL Draft will occur at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., from Thursday, April 27 to Saturday, April 29. ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network will broadcast all seven rounds.
Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.
The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
