Raiders Jakobi Meyers in Concussion Protocol

WR Jakobi Meyers was a significant factor in the Las Vegas Raiders' 17-16 victory over the Denver Broncos. He'll have to clear concussion protocol to play Sunday in Buffalo.

During the offseason, one of the Raiders' more significant moves was to sign wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to a three-year deal.

Coach Josh McDaniels and the Raiders felt Meyers fit right into the Raiders' offensive identity on the field and the type of player they wanted off the field.

McDaniels and General Manager Dave Ziegler brought in multiple players McDaniels had ties to from his time in New England. Outside of Jimmy Garoppolo, none of those additions were bigger than Meyers.

Meyers showed why on Sunday.

"He always comes up big in big games; today was no different," McDaniels said.

In his first game with the Las Vegas Raiders, Meyers immediately showed his value to the Raiders' offense in more ways than one. Meyers' various traits make him an asset to the offense, even when the ball is not going to him.

"He does a lot of dirty work," McDaniels said.  "He blocks in our running game. He can go inside and make plays inside. He has good size and can make some things happen on third down or the red zone. That is why he is here.

"Dave [Ziegler] was able to get that taken care of so we could have a guy on the other side of [WR] Davante [Adams] in two receiver sets who does some of those same things the way he does them."

Meyers finished the game as the leading receiver for the Raiders with nine receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns, making a catch that would essentially put the game away for Las Vegas.

However, it came at a cost

While being tackled short of a first down, Meyers sustained what appeared to be a concussion. As of now, McDaniels says there is no new information on the status of Meyers other than the fact that Meyers is in concussion protocol.

"I don't have an update on Jakobi," McDaniels said on Monday. "He is in the (concussion) protocol, so that's all I'll say about that. “He is a football player. He is tough."

As the Raiders head to New York this week for what is sure to be another challenging road game against the Buffalo Bills, the health of one of their biggest offensive threats will be crucial to their chances of winning against the Bills.

The Silver and Black remain on the road next week as they travel to play the Bills on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
