Jakobi Meyers Excited for the Bright Lights of MNF
Regarding regular season football games, none are a bigger deal than Monday Night Football. The Las Vegas Raiders find themselves with a game against another one of the marquee franchises in the NFL.
"I'm excited, honestly," wide receiver Jakobi Meyers told Sports Illustrated. "It's a Monday night game, its hard not to be excited for those. You know everybody is watching. So, you have to go out there and put your best foot forward."
Meyers says he grew up watching Monday Night Football like any other football player who dreamed of making it to the professional level.
"I've had games on Monday nights, I grew up watching Monday Night Football," Meyers said. "It's a big game for sure. I know I watched it growing up.
"I just picture all of the little kids out there watching, trying to figure out who they want to be like as somebody watching. Your family, your friends, everybody out there is literally watching."
Meyers led the New England Patriots in receiving three seasons in a row and has averaged nearly 13 yards per reception when he plays on Monday Night Football.
Last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas' receiving corps took a major blow when Davante Adams went down due to an injury. The brief loss of Adams naturally allowed the Chargers to focus more on Meyers.
"It makes a big difference, a player of that caliber, honestly, he's going to change the game for anybody," Mayers said. "He's a guy you really rely on day in and day out. So, when he goes down, it was a hit but we've got a good group of guys."
"He's just such a good player but it's not even so much that he's a good player, he just plays hard," Meyers told Sports Illustrated.
The brief loss of Adams also allowed Meyers to become even more of a leader to the younger receivers on the team.
"So, when somebody of that caliber is playing that hard, you really have no choice, if you're a younger guy, to match his intensity," Meyers said. "He brings his A game every day, so the rest of us need to catch up."
After a week of preparation, Meyers knows the Packers' defense will come ready to play.
"They play hard, they get to the ball," Meyers said. "They have a lot of confident dudes that make a lot of plays on the ball. We'll have to bring our 'A' game."
If Adams can be himself, Meyers can do what he's historically done on Monday Night Football. If the Raiders' offense can protect the football better, Monday might be the day it finally gets going in the right direction.
The Silver and Black return home to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas next week to play the Green Bay Packers on Monday, Oct. 9, at 8:15 p.m. EDT/5:15 p.m. PDT.
