Jakobi Meyers Still in Protocol, Doubtful for Sunday
Last week, the Las Vegas Raiders put on full display just how talented they are at wide receiver. At any given time, the Raiders may have four or five legitimate pass-catching options on the field, making a long day for just about any defense.
Against Denver, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers led the Raiders with nine catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns. He also was responsible for a crucial first down on a catch late in the game which would later lead to him having to leave the game due to a concussion.
Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels says Meyers is still in concussion protocol and that Las Vegas' medical staff will make a decision on Meyer's status for Sunday, soon. This means that while there is still a possibility Meyers plays on Sunday, it looks doubtful that he will.
"Nothing right now," McDaniels said. "Still going through the protocol. And that's obviously going to be a -- they'll determine the pace that that goes through."
When asked if Meyers will play on Sunday, McDaniels simply stated: "I doubt that."
The Raiders not having Meyers would be a huge loss. Luckily for Las Vegas, they're arguably deeper at the wide receiver position than any team in the National Football League.
The loss of Meyers equals more opportunities for other receivers on the roster.
"Jakobi is a really good football player," McDaniels said. "And so, if he's not available, then everybody has to step up and give themselves great opportunities to produce. And that's a good thing for them."
Las Vegas' front office added quality depth across the board in preparation for the normal wear and tear of an NFL season. Now is where the offseason additions the Raiders made come in handy.
"That's what the National Football League is about; we won't have any more weeks where we don't have somebody that's banged up," McDaniels said. "The season has begun, and the injuries will happen as nature takes its course and other people have opportunities here to go out there and produce. That's what we expect them to do."
With their first home game being next week and another divisional game the week after, Meyers sitting out this week for Buffalo might be what is best for the him and the Raiders.
The Silver and Black remain on the road this week as they travel to play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
