Jimmy Garoppolo Out Sunday Against Los Angeles Chargers
The Las Vegas Raiders have officially ruled out starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.
Garoppolo spent the whole week of practice in concussion protocol and practiced minimally on Thursday and Friday.
However, Garoppolo was unable to fully clear the protocol and will not be able to travel with the team to Los Angeles. This will leave the Raiders with a decision to make at the most important position on the field.
A potential injury of some kind for Garoppolo was something Las Vegas' coaching staff and front office has properly prepared for, and four games into the season, it has proven to be a wise decision.
With Garoppolo officially out, Coach Josh McDaniels will have to decide between starting veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer or rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell, who had arguably the best preseason out of all of the NFL rookie quarterbacks.
Much like many other positions on the team, the Raiders were sure to have two or three quality players. The same was the case at quarterback.
Although nothing has been confirmed as of yet, most people around the organization believe that McDaniels will start Hoyer Sunday in Los Angeles and see how the game progresses from there.
Since becoming a full-time starter in the NFL, Garoppolo has sustained numerous injuries and his health has been a legitimate concern for the Raiders from the day he signed his contract with Las Vegas.
The Raiders will have until Sunday morning to officially announce who their starter will be against the Chargers. This could give the Raiders a little bit of a competitive advantage, as Los Angeles will enter Sunday not knowing which quarterback they will face.
Whether or not that advantage is real or perceived will be figured out on in a divisional game, where any advantage is one worth having.
The Silver and Black return to the road this week in Inglewood, Calif., to play the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 4:05 p.m. EDT/1:05 p.m. PDT.
