Who Will Be the Raiders Backup QB?
A big question the Las Vegas Raiders need to figure out with Training Camp and the 2023-24 NFL regular season approaching is who will be the second-string quarterback?
We do know that the Raiders' starting quarterback will be Jimmy Garoppolo. The Raiders signed him this offseason as a free agent.
Garoppollo can be a talented quarterback, bringing a winning trait as a starting quarterback. However, he tends to get injured.
So who would take over as quarterback if the starting quarterback Garoppolo gets injured?
The Raiders added two new quarterbacks this offseason. Veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O'Connell are the two quarterbacks the Raiders signed this offseason.
Hoyer brings 14 years of NFL experience to the Raiders quarterback room. He has familiarity with Coach Josh Mcdaniel's offensive system. They spent two seasons together with the New England Patriots.
Hoyer has started 40 games as an NFL quarterback and is a veteran quarterback every team should have in their quarterback room. The 14-year veteran has thrown for 10,668 yards and 53 touchdown passes.
The Raiders drafted Aidan O'Connell in this year's NFL Draft. The quarterback out of Purdue was selected 135th overall in the fourth round.
O'Connell is the first quarterback the franchise drafted since 2016. He started his college career at Purdue as a walk-on quarterback and was listed eighth on Purdue's depth chart. He ended his college finishing as Purdue's all-time leader in completion percentage at 66.7 percent and also had 65 touchdown passes twice and was selected second-team All-Big Ten.
Chase Garbers is another quarterback who can compete for the second-string position. He is entering his second season with the Silver and Black after his rookie season on the Raiders practice squad.
Garbers was signed as an undrafted free agent 2022 out of UC Berkeley. The Raiders added him to the main roster toward the end of the 2023-24 season.
Overall the Raiders have a solid quarterback room. The question of who will be the Raiders' second-string quarterback will soon be answered after Raiders Training Camp and before the 2023-24 season.
