The Las Vegas Raiders’ biggest free agent signing this offseason was quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who will reunite with the current regime of Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Dave Ziegler.

Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders. He will be the first quarterback not named Derek Carr to start week one for the team since the 2013 season.

Wherever he has been in his career, Garoppolo has been a winner, whether it was in New England with McDaniels, Ziegler, and the Patriots where he won two Super Bowls as a backup, or with the San Francisco 49ers, where he played in a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship Games.

Garoppolo has started 57 games in his career and holds a 40-17 record. He has thrown 87 career touchdown passes, 82 of those coming as a starter. He has been an important piece to several winning teams.

The Raiders fell short of expectations last season, going 6-11 one year after a playoff appearance. Ziegler and McDaniels are looking to rebuild the team in their vision, and part of that was bringing in a quarterback who can efficiently run the system in place.

This is where Garoppolo comes in. Along with him, the Raiders brought in many new players on both sides of the ball, including eight new pass catchers.

In wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Phillip Dorsett, the Raiders have two players who have played in the McDaniels system before, so Garoppolo should take little time building a rapport with them.

Garoppolo also has had success throwing to tight ends in his career, and the Raiders brought in three of them, including second round rookie Michael Mayer, who has been compared to all-time great tight ends such as Jason Witten and Rob Gronkowski.

The Raiders are looking to return to the playoffs after a disappointing season in 2022. Garoppolo is in a system he is used to with multiple pass catchers who are capable of making big plays.

As a quarterback, Garoppolo must maintain the level of play he has established over the years when he is healthy. If he can do that, the Raiders should be encouraged about their chances of making the playoffs.
