Former NFL Coach Says Jimmy G Could Have Best Season Yet
There's a lot of uncertainty concerning the year new Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will have.
A veteran entering his 10th NFL season, Garoppolo has sustained his share of injuries, including a season-ending broken foot that cut his 2022 season short. He hasn't seen action in an NFL game of any form since.
One analyst, in particular, has a rather unpopular take on the season that awaits the two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback.
Mike Martz, former Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams, sees Garoppolo having quite the season with the Silver and Black.
"The guy who is going to have a breakout year is Garoppolo if he’ll stay healthy," Martz said in a piece for The 33rd Team. "They are good on the offensive line, and they really added weapons to that offense. He could have the best year he’s ever had.
"He’s comfortable with (Coach Josh) McDaniels. The system benefits him. They’ll gear things toward what he does really well. There’s a comfort level between the two: the head coach/play caller and the quarterback. Because the offensive line is playing so well and with the quality of the perimeter people, he’ll have a great season if he stays standing. That’s always been a question for Jimmy G: Can you keep him healthy?"
Martz was a coach in the NFL for 12 seasons, six of which he was a head coach. He was the offensive coordinator of the historically great "Greatest Show on Turf" offense that would contribute to the Rams' XXXIV Super Bowl title.
Martz then took over as head coach for the next five-plus seasons, leading the Rams to Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001-02 when they faced the New England Patriots.
Then Martz would become offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions for two seasons, followed by a one-year stint as OC of the San Francisco 49ers and a two-year stint as OC of the Chicago Bears.
The Silver and Black return to preseason action when they play the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 9 p.m. EDT/6 p.m. PDT.
