The Las Vegas Raiders substantially changed their identity this offseason, signing former New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.75-million contract.

Garoppolo replaces Derek Carr, the Raiders’ starting quarterback for the last nine seasons. He rejoins Coach Josh McDaniels, with whom he spent the first three seasons of his career.

While Garoppolo figures to have success in an offensive system he already knows, some NFL media believes he may not live up to the expectations being placed on him.

CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan named Garoppolo the Raiders’ most overvalued player, believing the team relies too much on him to deliver them success.

On Garoppolo, Sullivan writes,

“Going from Derek Carr to Jimmy Garoppolo felt like a lateral move. Sure, Garoppolo has enjoyed more playoff success and has a rapport with Josh McDaniels from their time in New England, but the veteran quarterback is hardly an ironman. Even now, Garoppolo is dealing with a foot injury that has the potential to end his Raiders tenure before it even starts if things break the wrong way. Even if the foot injury is resolved by the time Week 1 rolls around, Garoppolo has played in at least 15 regular-season games just twice since becoming a full-time starter in 2017. Moving off of Carr for an injury-prone quarterback who just underwent foot surgery this offseason puts Las Vegas in a risky spot for 2023.”

Garoppolo has had his fair share of injuries, including his most recent foot surgery. However, in the seasons he has been healthy, the teams he has quarterbacked have been notably successful.

Garoppolo is in another favorable situation with the Raiders, with a familiar offensive system, a star pass catcher in Davante Adams, depth at that position, and an impressive offensive line. In his previous two stops, Garoppolo had other situations that were beneficial to him.

The Raiders head into the 2023 season, hoping Garoppolo can lead them back to the playoffs. While there are risks with Garoppolo’s past bill of health, if he can stay on the field this season, history shows the Raiders will have a successful 2023.
