Adams-Jacobs Combination Gets the Raiders Going
Through eight games, the offense arguably needed the most improvement for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Silver and Black ranked near the bottom of the league in most statistical categories.
The offense's inability to consistently move the ball, let alone score points, was a large part of why Coach Josh McDaniels and Offensive Coordinator Mick Lombardi were let go.
Interim Offensive Coordinator Bo Hardegree has spent his first two weeks on the job getting his best play-makers involved. That's something the previous coaching staff seemed unable to do.
Against the New York Jets, All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams was targeted on the Raiders' first four passes, catching three.
Although the offense didn't light up the scoreboard, getting Adams the ball early undoubtedly helped rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell get settled in and helped the offense get into a groove.
"It helps a lot just getting a little flow early, getting added to the game, and not having to wait until right before halftime to get a ball," Adams said. "It just allows the No. 1 receiver to feel a little bit more welcomed into it and warms up the hands early.
"It's not easy catching the ball when you haven't seen one in 30 minutes. So, it's something that I definitely like and look forward to doing moving forward."
It is not a coincidence that neither Adams nor Jacobs was having productive seasons until two weeks ago but now have had two effective games in a row.
Jacobs' success over the last two weeks has helped Adams' efforts on the field.
“It's big," Adams said. "It makes it to where if he's doing that, they'll obviously have to change the way they're treating the box and then more one-on-one opportunities, which usually leads to more success for the wideout. So, we've got to win our one-on-one’s still, but I definitely like to see him toting it because that will free up everything.”
The Raiders have one of the most expensive offensive rosters in the NFL. They hadn't played up to their potential through eight weeks of the season.
As they head to Miami and into the last half of their season, the Raiders continuing to get their best play-makers involved will only help their cause.
While many things have changed for the Raiders over the last few weeks, one has stayed the same. That is, getting Adams and Jacobs involved is what makes Las Vegas' offense successful.
The Silver and Black will head out on the road to South Beach to take on the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST.
