Raiders' QB Situation Still Up in the Air for Sunday
The Las Vegas Raiders have three competent quarterbacks on their roster. Each quarterback brings his strengths and weaknesses to Las Vegas' offense.
After Jimmy Garoppolo's back injury, Brian Hoyer completed six passes for 102 yards in last week's victory over the Green Bay Packers.
"Not today, (Garoppolo) won't practice today," Coach Josh McDaniels said.
There is no new information regarding Garoppolo at the moment.
"Nothing yet," McDaniels said. "I mean, that will be a medical thing as we go through the week here, and we will just kind of see how it progresses. But nothing yet."
Should Garoppolo not be able to play on Sunday, Las Vegas will have to decide between the veteran, Hoyer, and rookie Aidan O'Connell. Both have played well when called upon this season.
O'Connell played relatively well in his first career start in the National Football League. The rookie passed for 238 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. That isn't too bad for his first career start, considering former Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack sacked him six times.
Hoyer not only led the Raiders to a victory on Sunday but also helped open up things for the offense after his 48-yard completion to rookie wide receiver Tre Tucker shortly after halftime.
In the second half, the Raiders went from a little more than seven yards per pass attempt to just over 10 yards per throw.
Still, there is a chance Garoppolo might play on Sunday.
"I mean, both of them (Hoyer and O'Connell) will get opportunities today," McDaniels said. "Like I said, we'll kind of see how today goes and then see what the prognosis is and see how practice goes, see how Jimmy [Garoppolo] is feeling. So, I think there are a few balls in the air right now that we're going to have to sort through, for sure."
This offseason, the Raiders added veteran leadership and young, talented players at key positions. This was the case at quarterback, as the Raiders made sure to have a plan when Garoppolo went down due to an injury.
The Raiders spent all offseason preparing for this situation, and time will tell just how prepared they are as a coaching staff and as a team.
The Silver and Black will head out on the road to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
