McDaniels Speaks on Fights Happening in Training Camp

Las Vegas Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels shares his thoughts on fights breaking out in joint practices with the Los Angeles Rams

The Las Vegas Raiders are fortunate to compete and practice with different NFL teams during the 2023 training camp. Joint practices are beneficial for the Raiders as they prepare for the start of the 2023-24 NFL season. 

The Raiders have had joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers and now have joint practices with the Los Angeles Rams.

During the first joint practices with the 49ers, the Raiders had no issues on fights occurring with the other team. This time around, things heated up as the Raiders and Rams had their first joint practices on Aug. 16.

Coach Josh McDaniels spoke with the media after the first joint practice with the Rams. He talked about the fighting that broke out during the Raiders and Rams' first joint practice together.

"That’s not what we're here to do," McDaniels said. "So, we know it hurts the team when you do it in the game. Losing players in the middle of the game because we're going to get involved in extracurricular activity after plays and all the rest of it doesn't help our football team win. And last week, both teams did a good job of understanding what we wanted to try to get out of it.

"(Rams Coach) Sean McVay and I are on the same page on this in terms of what we're trying to get done here. None of it involves fighting. So, to me it's a waste of time to come out here and that's not toughness, that's not football. We're here to work, we're here to try to improve our football team. I think that's what they're here to do. And hopefully we do it the right way. I was proud of the way our team competed last week and did the right things, and I expect the same thing today." 

The Raiders are set to have another joint practice with the Rams before playing their second preseason game in SOFI Stadium.

The Silver and Black return to preseason action when they play the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 9 p.m. EDT/6 p.m. PDT.
