Raiders' Defense Preparing for All Possible Scenarios
The Las Vegas Raiders will enter the weekend not knowing who will start for them at quarterback. Their opponent, the Chicago Bears, is in a similar position.
At the moment, it looks like Bears' starter Justin Fields might not play, as he sustained a thumb injury last week. Even though he has been listed as doubtful, Coach Josh McDaniels is not taking any chances.
McDaniels plans to prepare his team for both Fields and the Bears' backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent.
"Obviously, [Justin] Fields, I understand the report that he may or may not go," McDaniels said. "He's a versatile guy who can hurt you with his arm or hurt you with his legs.
"The young kid [Tyson Bagent], when he came in last week, very much the same things. He understands the game plan. He can do things with his legs as well. We've seen a lot of film on him, too."
Bagent is a rookie quarterback who went undrafted out of Shepherd University in West Virginia and found himself possibly looking at his first career start in the National Football League. There is a limited film on Bagent for the Raiders to study.
"There's film on everybody if you look hard enough to find it," McDaniels said. "He played in the preseason a bunch. He played last week, obviously. There's college tape as well.
"I think most importantly is to understand the skill-set of the player you're talking about. In this case, it's multiple players."
For a coach as detailed as McDaniels, being prepared to defend against a backup quarterback is standard practice.
"We have to be able to defend whoever is out there," McDaniels said. "We always talk about the backup quarterback, anyway.
"Last week was no different. We had some tape on [Malik] Cunningham and knew that there might be something where he could potentially be a factor, so you have to prepare and do your due diligence.
"We have all the tape on [Bagent]. We'll watch it all, he's played in their system and their offense, he did some good things in the preseason, certainly. He can do some things with his legs, he finds the right people in the passing game, he's accurate, he has a good arm. So, I mean, there's enough to go off of, for sure."
The Raiders' defense has played in some of the most down-to-the-wire games in the NFL this season and has stood tall. Now it potentially will face an undrafted quarterback and a 1-5 team with nothing to lose.
The Raiders must ensure they are ready for anything and everything the Bears might throw at them.
The bigger question is whether or not Bagent is ready to face the ferocious Maxx Crosby and Patrick Graham's merry band of misfits.
The Silver and Black will head out on the road to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
