Josh McDaniels: 'You Have to Find New Ways to Win'
The Las Vegas Raiders earned the third victory of the 2023 season when they defeated the New England Patriots, 21-17, at Allegiant Stadium Sunday.
As opposed to their first two wins, the Raiders never trailed in Sunday's game, ans entering the fourth quarter, it was their game to lose.
For a team still searching for its identity, it can be reassuring to know you can win in a variety of situations: coming from behind, leading the whole way, changing quarterbacks midway through, etc.
"Winning, in general, is hard," Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels said when he addressed the media after the victory. "And so, I think when you realize that there's a lot of different ways you can do it. In Denver, we needed to salt the game away on offense, and last week was a different type of a game all in general, and then, today, we played a little bit of field position at the end and the defense came up big. So, you have to find new ways to win every week.
"You're never going to win the same way. And I think the resiliency of our team, the mindset that they have, the demeanor that they come into the building with, that's why you improve. That's why you have a chance in close games."
Las Vegas is far from where it wants and needs to be as a team. Sunday was the first game it scored more than 20 points this season and yet, the Raiders still find themselves at .500.
"We know where we're at," McDaniels said. "Our record is what it is. We kind of battle and scrap and claw and try to win without scoring 20-plus points, which is crazy.
"So, I mean we can do a lot of things to make life a little easier on ourselves. And that's what we're going to work on going forward, but I don't think right now is the time to kind of measure what we are, where we're going to be. I hope our best football is way out in front of us clearly.
"And I think I've got a group of guys in the locker room who work hard every week, and that gives us a chance to get better."
The Silver and Black will head on the road to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:05 p.m. EDT/10:05 a.m. PDT.
