While it seems to happen often in the NFL, it is hard for a franchise to succeed with a new quarterback.

The process that the Las Vegas Raiders are facing right now is difficult because they have a small window of time to find the quarterback of the future -- one who they want at the helm for years to come.

"I mean, I think there's always urgency at that position," Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels said at the NFL Combine on Tuesday. "You know, look, the goal for us eventually is to have somebody that's going to be here for a long time. I think that you know, you see the teams that are having success right now in our league, I would say in our conference, and specifically, in our division, you know, they're young players that were drafted by their clubs, and they're being developed there under the same continuity.

"And so, I think that eventually, yes. Do I think you, you know, have to do that if you're not sure or sold on the player, and now you're making a mistake just to try and say that you're trying to solve a problem? I don't think that's really a smart decision. So we're going to do everything we can do to evaluate every player at that position, both in the draft and free agency, and try to do what we can do to improve the room.

"I mean, there's certainly going to be a number of players added at that position. Right now, only Chase Garbers is under contract (at quarterback). So we'll look at everything we can look at. But the goal eventually is try to have a young player here that's going to be a Raider for a long time."

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. March 7, 2023, before 4 p.m. EST, is the club's deadline to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
