How the Raiders Personnel Groupings Could Change
As Coach Josh McDaniels enters his second season with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team had a busy offseason, building the roster the way he and General Manager Dave Ziegler are used to.
The team moved on from quarterback Derek Carr and tight end Darren Waller, opting for Jimmy Garoppolo and bringing in three new faces at tight end.
With all their moves in the offseason, the Raiders offense will look much different under McDaniels in year two. Let’s look at some of the personnel groupings the Raiders ran in 2022 and see if they will make any changes in 2023.
Football analyst Warren Sharp created a chart that tracked every NFL team’s offense's personnel groupings in 2022. Unsurprisingly, most teams, including the Raiders, ran 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end, three wide receivers) most of the time.
One exception to this was the Miami Dolphins, who ran 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends, and two wide receivers) the most at 61 percent of the time.
The Raiders ran 11 personnel 62 percent of the time on 705 plays. They were pretty successful in this formation, posting a 49 percent success rate. It’s likely the Raiders continue to run this formation, as they will be at a match-up advantage with wide receivers Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, and Jakobi Meyers on the field together.
The second-most used personnel grouping by the Raiders was 12 personnel, at 18 percent. This grouping could be used more often in 2023, as the Raiders might pair rookie tight end Michael Mayer on the field with one of their new signings, Austin Hooper or O.J. Howard.
The Raiders ran 21 personnel eight percent of the time, 22 personnel six percent of the time, and 13 four percent of the time.
Despite some new faces who will contribute on offense this season, it does not seem likely that the Raiders’ personnel groupings will change substantially. They still have the personnel to run the same formations they ran last season, just to what they hope will be a more significant effect.
The Las Vegas Raiders open training camp for the entire team on July 25, 2023.
The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
