Raiders Urged to Sign Veteran QB
The Las Vegas Raiders' quarterback position was expected to be a strength of one of the highest-paid offensive rosters in the NFL this season.
However, the position was unstable this past season until rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell was named the starter midway through the season.
O'Connell played well overall, considering all of the obstacles thrown at him. The week he took over the team, the Raiders fired the only head coach and offensive coordinator he had since being with the Silver and Black.
O'Connell would win his first two starts and finish with a 5-4 record down the stretch.
The rookie quarterback had his ups, such as leading the National Football League in quarterback rating at home against the Kansas City Chiefs, and his downs, such as not completing a pass after the first quarter on the road against the Chiefs. However, O'Connell did about as well as could have reasonably been expected.
Still, Coach Antonio Pierce recently acknowledged the fact that the Raiders will be adding a quarterback to their roster at some point during the offseason.
ESPN NFL Analyst Mina Kimes voiced her thoughts on which quarterback the Raiders should pursue this offseason.
“When you talk about who’s going to play quarterback for [the Raiders] next year, you start considering not options just in the draft but also in free agency,” Kimes recently said on “NFL Live.”
“Specifically, Kirk Cousins, who is a free agent. I think most people agree is going to be probably the highest-paid free-agent quarterback. I think they’d be able to afford his contract, and I would like that for them. Because I think it’s a good destination. I would like Las Vegas to make a run at Kirk and see if they can entice him to come south."
Cousins is coming off of a season-ending Achilles tear, similar to how Jimmy Garoppolo came to Las Vegas after an injury derailed his last season with the San Francisco 49ers.
The similarities between the two quarterbacks could be enough to deter the Raiders from signing Cousins.
From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
