Raiders Opponent QB Spotlight: Justin Herbert
The AFC West is home to some of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
When the Las Vegas Raiders go on the road again this Sunday to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., to take on the Los Angeles Chargers, they will face one of the league’s best talents at that position, Justin Herbert.
Herbert was selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Oregon, and quickly established himself as the Chargers’ franchise quarterback.
In his rookie season, Herbert started 15 games and passed for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Those numbers were good enough to earn him the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Herbert followed up his rookie season with another incredible performance in 2021, throwing for more than 5,000 yards and 38 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. He was named to the Pro Bowl after this elite season.
In his most recent game against the Minnesota Vikings, Herbert was nothing short of excellent. He completed 40-of-47 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns to help the Chargers pick up their first victory of the season.
Herbert is widely considered to be one of the top three to five quarterbacks in the NFL. He stands at 6-foot-6 and weighs 235 pounds, possessing elite physical size for a franchise quarterback.
Herbert has elite football IQ, consistently making good decisions and not making mistakes that lose his team games. He has excellent arm talent, and is able to make accurate throws at all angles at different velocities. He can also air it out deep, an element of his game the Raiders must respect.
While he is not the most dynamic threat with his legs, Herbert has the ability to move around the pocket and pick up first downs by running when he needs to.
Herbert has put up excellent numbers against the Raiders in his career, completing 63.4 percent of his passes for 1,859 yards and 14 touchdowns with only one interception in six games vs. the Silver and Black. While these numbers are elite, Herbert has a .500 record against the Raiders at 3-3.
The Raiders are looking to improve their defense this season, and they will face a tough test against one of the best quarterbacks in the league with Herbert, who has given them trouble in the past and has been playing at an incredibly high level already this season.
The Silver and Black returns to the road next week as they head to Los Angeles to play the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 4:05 p.m. EDT/1:05 p.m. PDT.
