Past Lessons Learned Will Help Luke Getsy in the Future

New Las Vegas Raiders Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy has earned his stripes in the NFL. Getsy explains how lessons learned from previous stops will help him.
In this story:

The Las Vegas Raiders recently named Antonio Pierce as their permanent head coach.

The Raiders followed that move up by adding other, more experienced coaches to his coaching staff, most recently Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy.

Getsy joins the Raiders after spending time with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. Getsy says his experience in both places will only help him move forward with the Raiders.

"Experience is the best thing you can get," Getsy said. "It's what we talk about with quarterbacks all the time -- you getting on that game film, there's nothing like it. And that game experience gives you the most to grow from, and it's the same thing with me. Every game, I found my way; I found my way to get through the process a little bit cleaner each and every week.

"From season one to season two, and the way that we were able to help those guys you know in season two -- the guys like DJ [Moore] and Cole [Kmet] had the best seasons of their career. That's something that's a really cool thing that we were able to do and continue to grow there. And it's always about getting better every single day.

"So, whether it's in the upstairs as an offensive staff, or whether it's when you're with your players, everything is always about getting better every single day, and being able to stick to that and hold true to that was something that I was really proud of."

Getsy's time with the Packers gave him experience with a pass-first offense. His time in Chicago gave him experience in a more run-based offense. Those experiences will help the Raiders win via the run or the pass.

“Hey, we're all about winning here," Getsy said. "And that's whatever it takes to win. And whether that's some weeks you have to run it more and some weeks, you have to throw it more, whatever it takes.

"I think it's all about playing into the players that you have and trying to get them to do the things that they do really well. And so, whatever that looks like, we'll find out here this fall, but we'll take this offseason to go ahead and figure out exactly what that is."

From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
