Telesco Will Have Final Say on Personnel Decisions
The Las Vegas Raiders are in a unique situation with Coach Antonio Pierce at the helm and with the 13th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft in their back pocket.
The Raiders have a head coach who will catch the attention of many top free agents this offseason.
The Silver and Black also are too far back in the draft to be able to select a player who could potentially turn their fortunes around quickly, such as one of the top quarterbacks in the draft.
Pierce certainly has an eye for talent and has built relationships with many players across the league, allowing him to make signings that are highly likely to work out, such as cornerback Jack Jones.
While those things might be true, Raiders owner Mark Davis told ESPN that General Manager Tom Telesco will have the final say over all personnel decisions.
Raiders owner Mark Davis told ESPN that the general manager will have final say on all personnel decisions, and the biggest one is at quarterback, where rookie Aidan O’Connell was inconsistent after taking over for Jimmy Garoppolo midseason.
While it seems Telesco and Pierce are on the same page about the team's overall direction, Pierce has told Telesco that he wants top-tier talent at quarterback. The problem for Pierce is that the Raiders will have difficulty trading up from the 13th overall pick.
Pierce wants a franchise signal-caller, and he has a relationship with Heisman winner Jayden Daniels (LSU) from when they were both at Arizona State. But jumping from the No. 13 pick in the draft to No. 2 or No. 3 might be too rich for Telesco’s taste.
The Raiders have a front office filled with experience in Telesco and Assistant General Manager Champ Kelly. They also have a coach who will have the ability to recruit players Telesco, and the Raiders might not have otherwise had a legitimate chance at signing.
Pierce and Telesco will work together this offseason to improve their roster and the chances of making the playoffs next season.
From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
