Marvin Lewis Speaks on Role With Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders have filled many of their positions around Coach Antonio Pierce with many experienced coaches. Marvin Lewis is one such coach.
In this story:

The Las Vegas Raiders hired a first-time Coach Antonio Pierce to lead their team into the future.

Although Pierce has years of coaching experience on many levels of football, this is Pierce's first opportunity as the permanent head coach of a professional football team.

From former New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin to Former Cincinnati Bengals Coach Marvin Lewis, Pierce being fully aware of his strengths and weaknesses led to him filling out his coaching staff with multiple coaches with the professional coaching experience he lacks.

Furthermore, many of the coaches Pierce added to his staff have previous coaching experience, not only on the professional level but also prior head coaching experience in the National Football League.

Thus, Pierce has multiple respected coaches in his corner who have insight only former NFL head coaches can provide.

Lewis is one of those coaches, having spent 16 seasons as the Bengals' head coach. He and Pierce coached together while both were on Arizona State's coaching staff as co-defensive coordinators.

While in Cincinnati, Lewis didn't have an official assistant coach. The closest person he had to an assistant was Bengals owner Mike Brown.

Lewis says Brown was the owner but also the de facto assistant coach. Lewis is not an owner, but he will be in a similar role in Las Vegas as Brown was in Cincinnati.

"I did have one, he just owned the team," Lewis told Greg Wilson of Yahoo Sports. "It will be that kind of role. Yeah, I'm Mike, but I'm not the owner. We talked every day, and that's what AP and I are doing."

Lewis is still around but in a more official role than when Pierce was the interim head coach. Pierce and the Raiders will lean on Lewis' experience and knowledge as next season approaches.

"Antonio is a very smart, hard-driving, hard-working guy. I committed to help him in this," Lewis said. "Everybody who spoke with me wanted to make sure that if he got the job full-time, I was still going to be able to be a part of it.”

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
