Raiders Backup RBs Stepped Up Throughout Offseason
Las Vegas Raiders star running back Josh Jacobs was unavailable during the minicamp and OTA campaigns. The Raiders decided to use their Franchise Tag on Josh Jacobs this NFL off-season and continue working on a long-term deal.
However, backup running backs Brandon Bolden, Ameer Abdullah, Zamir White, and Brittian Brown have filled in for Josh Jacobs.
Zamir White and Brittan Brown are entering their second seasons and still figuring out their roles in the running back room. Zamir White had a few carries last season for the Raiders as the third-string running back. Brittan Brown was mostly used on special teams last season.
Offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi spoke with the Media on the running back room stepping in this off-season.
"[W]e always talk about your role is what you make it, and I think there hasn't been a greater opportunity than the one in the running back room for those young players like Zamir and Brittain," Lombardi said. "They've gotten a lot of reps, they've gotten a lot of exposure, they've learned a lot, so there's no hiding anymore. ... The young players, they sometimes need to learn how to fail to succeed, and I think it's really what you're seeing.
"Look I'm not saying Zamir White and Brittain Brown go out there and mess up every play, I'm not saying that at all, but look, just like you do anything new, you go out there and you learn from your mistakes. And being able to do that and fix their mistakes, I think, is what they're able to do this spring and they're doing a great job of that."
There is also a 2022 undrafted free agent running back for the Raiders who has also stepped into the Raiders' running back room this off-season. Sincere McCormick from Texas-San Antonio, where he broke records for rushing yards and rushing touchdown, unfortunately, tore an ACL last offseason. He has since then rehabbed and is currently hoping to have a role for the Raiders.
Lombardi also spoke with the media about McCormick and his comeback from his ACL injury.
"Any time a player obviously gets an injury like that where they're out a long time, you hope they come back and hope they can perform the way they want to perform," Lombardi said. "And I think Sincere has not only done that, but he's done a great job of just learning the playbook and coming out there. He's gotten some reps too, probably reps he wouldn't have gotten as a rookie before."
