Could Anthony Richardson Fit With the Raiders?

The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly met with Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Members of the Las Vegas Raiders are at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., for the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, a chance to see NFL Draft prospects show off their athletic abilities.

Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Dave Ziegler have spoken to the media since being in Indianapolis, both heavily about the quarterback position. The team released Derek Carr a few weeks ago and is looking for his replacement.

Their next quarterback might be in this draft class, as Ziegler has mentioned he would be open to this idea, and McDaniels has mentioned he wants a quarterback who will be a Raider for the long haul.

That quarterback could be Florida’s Anthony Richardson, as Jordan Schultz of the Score reported that Richardson has met with the Raiders, among other teams, as he undergoes medical testing. Richardson is one of the most polarizing players in the entire class.

Let’s take a closer look at Richardson and see if he could be the long-term answer at quarterback for the Raiders.

Richardson will likely have mixed reviews around the league. Some teams are going to love his raw physical traits. He is 6-4 and 231 pounds, will run a fast 40-yard dash, and has ridiculous arm strength. Richardson is very raw, however, completing only 54 percent of his passes for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Richardson became the full-time starter for the Gators this past season, and while the production wasn’t on the stat sheet, his physical tools and sky-high potential were fully on display. He’s also a huge threat with his legs, rushing for 654 yards and nine touchdowns.

On tape, Richardson has a strong arm and can throw with velocity, also showing off some precision. He stands tall in the pocket and isn’t afraid of contact. He simply doesn’t have the reps that the other first-round prospects in the draft have.

There might be questions about how Richardson would fit within McDaniels’ scheme, but the raw talent is clearly on display. Richardson likely won’t be ready to start immediately and could need time to sit and learn before he’s ready. The Raiders will have to decide whether or not Richardson’s potential is worth spending time developing him.

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. On March 7, 2023, before 4 p.m. EST, is the club's deadline to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. During that time, starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
