New Emergency QB Rule Could Benefit Raiders

The new emergency quarterback rule could end up helping the Las Vegas Raiders.
In this story:

The NFL is constantly looking to improve the game of football, and at the owners' spring meeting, they found a few new ways to do that.

NFL owners have approved a new rule allowing teams to designate an emergency quarterback on their roster, and that player would not be counted as an active player on game day.

The emergency quarterback would be eligible to be activated in a game if the team’s other quarterbacks cannot play. Practice squad quarterbacks would still not be eligible to be determined as emergency quarterbacks, even if they were activated for that particular game.

If either active quarterbacks are available to return to the game, the emergency quarterback cannot continue playing.

This rule could benefit the Las Vegas Raiders, whose new starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, has dealt with several injuries in his career.

Garoppolo has missed 30 games in the last five years due to various injuries.

Suppose Garoppolo were to be injured in a game or could not play for any reason. In that case, the two other quarterbacks on the roster are Brian Hoyer, 37 years old and entering his 14th season in the NFL, and rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell. Both Hoyer and O'Connell would be able to be active on game day.

The San Francisco 49ers were a team that dealt with an unusual number of injuries at the quarterback position last season, including Garoppolo, as well as Trey Lance and Brock Purdy. The 49ers were forced to turn to journeyman quarterback Josh Johnson in the NFC Championship game when he had only signed to the roster the month before.

The new rule allows teams like the Raiders to have more security when it comes to quarterbacks. The Raiders have quarterbacks who have dealt with injury or are inexperienced, so having another able body will allow them not to stress as much if they have to go to an emergency quarterback. And, they don’t have to use up a roster spot.

As the NFL reinstates a rule that was in place previously, the Raiders could end up benefiting if they ever lose one or two of their quarterbacks.

The Raiders' offseason workout schedule is as follows:

OTA Offseason workouts: May 22-23, May 25, May 31-June 2, June 12-15

Mandatory Minicamp: June 6-8
