Could Raiders Be Next Team to Thrive With New QB?

The Las Vegas Raiders have an opportunity to be the next team to excel after moving on from a longtime quarterback.

The Las Vegas Raiders are entering a new chapter.

After almost a decade with quarterback Derek Carr at the helm, the club is now tasked with finding its next QB1 this offseason.

When looking at recent teams that have had deep playoff runs, there is a common denominator that should be inspiring for the Raiders faithful.

They all found success after parting ways with their longtime franchise quarterback.

Here are those teams:

2019 Kansas City Chiefs

Alex Smith was a great quarterback, but he could never get Kansas City to where they wanted to be.

Around the start of the 2018 offseason, the Chiefs traded Smith to the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) and chose to go forward with Patrick Mahomes as their full-time starting quarterback.

Now, five years later, Mahomes has collected two MVP awards and has led the Chiefs to a pair of Super Bowl titles.

2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jameis Winston was thought to be the next savior when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him with the No. 1 pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, that was not the case.

That all turned around, though, in the 2020 offseason when Tampa Bay landed arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady.

Of course, the rest is history. Brady led the club to a Super Bowl title that same year, bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to the city for the first time in almost two decades.

2021 Los Angeles Rams

In 2021, The Rams traded longtime quarterback Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions for Matthew Stafford after having Goff at the helm for five seasons.

While Goff led the Rams to the Super Bowl in the 2018 season, he was never quite the elite quarterback the team needed him to be for them to take the next step.

Stafford would accomplish that in his first season with the franchise, leading Los Angeles to a Super Bowl title, having defeated some of the league's best teams along the way.

2022 Philadelphia Eagles

While the Eagles came up short in this year's Super Bowl, they had a terrific run after losing in the wild card round the season before.

The success came shortly after the team went separate ways with longtime quarterback Carson Wentz.

So far, the Jalen Hurts era has been everything the franchise could have hoped it will be.

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. The NFL Scouting Combine is Feb. 28-March 6, 2023, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. On March 7, 2023, before 4 p.m. EST is the club's deadline to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
