Michael Mayer Learning Everything He Can for Raiders
Las Vegas Raiders rookie tight end Michael Mayer got his first NFL action on Saturday in the team’s second straight preseason victory against the Los Angeles Rams.
Mayer had just one catch for three yards in the game, but even on the plays where he didn’t get the ball, showed off his innate ability to get open and his excellent route running skills for his size.
Mayer, a 6-4, 250-pound rookie who set receiving records at Notre Dame, was one of the best tight end prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. He has the potential to be an elite pass catching option and effective run blocker.
However, Mayer is far from a finished product. He still has lots to learn as an NFL player, and he knows that. Mayer continues to learn everything he can about the professional game, and he spoke more about that when he addressed the media on Tuesday at training camp.
“I think I grew up that way and I think it’s the way I was raised,” Mayer said. “And I think I was also born that way a little bit. That’s just kind of instilled into me if you know what I mean. And so, coming to the football field every day since I was three, four or five years old, it’s always been kind of: ‘What can I get better at? What can I learn from? What is the coach, the teacher, what are they trying to say to me right now?' And Coach Jerry [Schuplinski] has done a great job with that; Coach [Mick] Lombardi, Coach [Josh] McDaniels have all been there, really helping me improve, helping me get the offense down. That’s another whole category that we could talk about is me really trying to get this offense down and play as confident as I can out there. And so, we’re getting there.”
Mayer is looking to learn McDaniels’ offense as soon as he can in order to be the most impactful player he can be quickly, and he is willing to put the work in.
Mayer’s willingness to learn will only benefit him as he looks to reach his ceiling.
The Silver and Black return to preseason action when they play the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 8 p.m. EDT/5 p.m. PDT.
