Raiders' D Hoping Turnovers Continue to Come in Bunches

After forcing four turnovers in the last two games, the Las Vegas Raiders' defense hopes to continue the trend of giving their offense extra possessions.

Turnovers were a central point of emphasis for the Las Vegas Raiders' defense all offseason.

Although the defense was able to force many turnovers during joint practices and preseason games, they were yet to see their hard work pay off in a meaningful football game.

The floodgates might finally have opened.

After forcing the first interception of the season for both the Los Angeles Chargers offense and the Raiders' defense, safety Tre'von Moehrig shared the reason isn't satisfied with four turnovers, and they want more.

"It was good to get us on the board," Moehrig told Sports Illustrated. "We still have to find ways to get more of them."

Moehrig is a believer in the idea that turnovers come in bunches.

"That's what everybody says, every organization I've been through in college and high school and even here," Moehrig said. "Yeah, I do believe that. So, hopefully we can keep that going, but it starts in practice. Hopefully we can get it started in practice and translate it to the game."

After forcing four interceptions in two games, the emphasis on turnovers has resonated loud and clear with Las Vegas' defense.

"Definitely, it's contagious," Raiders cornerback Amik Robertson said. "I've been knowing that since high school. One person makes a play, someone else is about to make a play or the next guy is going to make a play on the ball. Stuff like that becomes contagious."

The Raiders had six interceptions in 17 games last season, which ranked last in the NFL. They already have four interceptions through five games this season and are almost halfway to their total turnovers from last season, 13, which was last in the NFL.

This season has been different, as the defense is only a few turnovers from being in the top half of the league in turnovers. They have kept the Raiders in almost every game this season and should continue to improve.

Turnovers are always important for a defense and are even more important when a team's offense has the second-most turnovers in the league.

Suppose Las Vegas' defense can continue to force turnovers and potentially even give the offense the ball back with good field position. In that case, there is plenty of reason to be optimistic about the direction of a defense determined to earn their respect.

The Silver and Black return home to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas tonight to play the Green Bay Packers at 8:15 p.m. EDT/5:15 p.m. PDT.
