The Las Vegas Raiders selected edge rusher Tyree Wilson with the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech in an effort to improve their pass rush and defense as a whole.

Wilson, who is a massive 6-foot-6 and 271 pounds, posted 109 total tackles, 29 tackles for losses, and 15.5 sacks in his two years with the Red Raiders. He has a rare blend of size, speed, and strength as an edge rusher.

Wilson still is an unrefined pass rusher, but he is a supremely raw talent, and the Raiders can use him in several ways on the defensive line.

Many sports books believe Wilson will have a good rookie season, as he currently has the third-highest odds of winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year award, according to VegasInsider.com.

FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesar’s, PointsBet, and DraftKings all list Wilson between +650 and +900 odds to take home the hardware, all third-highest behind edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. of the Houston Texans and defensive lineman Jalen Carter of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wilson was selected in the top 10, a clear sign the Raiders believe in his immense talent and overall potential. While he still is raw, he can impact the game in more ways than one, and can find different ways to produce.

For context, the last edge rusher to win Defensive Rookie of the Year was Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys, who posted 84 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 13 sacks and three forced fumbles in 2021.

These numbers were record breaking and will likely be difficult for Wilson to replicate. Chase Young of the Washington Commanders’ award-winning numbers of 44 tackles, 10 tackles for losses, and seven and a half sacks in 2020 could be much more attainable.

One potential complication for Wilson’s campaign would be the fact that he is likely to play behind Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones, so his numbers may not be close to that of his contemporaries. However, if the Raiders use Wilson in different ways along the defensive line, Wilson’s snap count might not be much of an issue.

Whether Wilson wins the Defensive Rookie of the Year award or not, it’s likely he will have a productive season and give Raiders’ fans an exciting look at his future.
