The Las Vegas Raiders selected Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson with the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Wilson was viewed as one of the best defenders in the draft class, possessing a rare combination of size, speed, and power. He played all over the defensive line for the Red Raiders, showing effectiveness off the edge and on the interior.

Wilson posted 109 total tackles, 29 for losses, 15.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in his three seasons at Texas Tech. He was named a First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Big 12 for his excellent season in 2022.

While Wilson has the physical profile to be a successful pass rusher in the NFL, he is still very raw and will need time to develop pass-rush moves for his arsenal. He often won with his pure strength and heavy hands, but to last in the NFL, he will need to find new ways to beat offensive linemen.

This is where Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones can come in to be mentors for Wilson. Crosby has consistently improved his pass rush ability every year he has been in the league, and Jones has recorded 112 sacks throughout his illustrious career.

Crosby is one of the most skilled pass rushers in the NFL, constantly adding new elements to his game to win his match-ups. One of the concerns with Wilson’s game was that he lacked an explosive get-off, something Crosby excels at.

Crosby impacts the game in several ways, batting down passes and consistently tackling the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage. He can pass down the things he’s learned to Wilson to help him to develop into the player he has the potential to be.

Jones, who enters his 12th season in the NFL, has posted seven seasons of 10 or more sacks, including in 2017 when he led the league with 17 and in 2019 when he posted 19. Jones has been one of the most feared pass rushers throughout his long career, and his experience and production are things he can pass down to Wilson.

With two of the league’s top pass rushers giving him pointers, Wilson should improve on the things he was lacking and build on his already high ceiling.
