Who Steps Up as Raiders No. 2 WR in 2023?
The Las Vegas Raiders have several solid options at wide receiver going into the 2023 season.
Beyond Davante Adams, who is arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL, Coach Josh McDaniels has a deep wide receiver unit.
This includes Hunter Renfrow, who has one of the more reliable set of hands in the NFL, and is one of the most underrated wide receivers in the league.
Before dealing with injury in 2022, Renfrow went over 1,000 yards receiving in 2021 with nine touchdowns and was named to the Pro Bowl.
Renfrow is looking to bounce back with a healthy 2023, hoping to continue his great play from two years ago.
The Raiders wide receiver corps also includes free agent signee Jakobi Meyers, who signed a three-year, $33-million contract with the Silver and Black in March.
Meyers was an undrafted free agent from North Carolina State who caught on with the New England Patriots, improving as a receiver each season.
Over the last two seasons, Meyers has posted more than 800 receiving yards and had a career-high six receiving touchdowns in 2022.
Meyers' work ethic and development earned him a multi-year contract with the Raiders, reuniting him with Coach Josh McDaniels, with whom Meyers spent the first three seasons of his career.
With Renfrow’s recent injury troubles and trade speculation, his spot as the Raiders No. 2 receiver is not guaranteed, and Meyers could have a chance to step into that role.
Meyers’ case for becoming the Raiders’ No. 2 wide receiver is a strong one. Familiarity with McDaniels’ system and a new quarterback in place in Jimmy Garoppolo -- who is also familiar with the system -- are factors that play into his favor.
Renfrow’s case is that he has been with the Raiders for the last four seasons and has posted a 1,000-yard Pro Bowl season. While he has spent only one of those seasons in the McDaniels system, his sharp route running, reliable hands, and ability to separate has made him a productive wide receiver in his career.
While both players are talented, the targets behind Adams are available to either Renfrow or Meyers as the No. 2 wide receiver. Whoever emerges as the second option will be reliable and productive for McDaniels and Garoppolo.
