Under-the-Radar X-Factors on Raiders' Offense
The Las Vegas Raiders are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season that saw them miss the playoffs again.
In hopes of turning things around in Coach Josh McDaniels’ second season, General Manager Dave Ziegler made several significant changes to the roster, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
The Raiders brought in quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to take over as the starter and traded Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller. These were part of the wholesale changes that were made to bring in players more familiar with McDaniels’ system.
With a new-look offense, the Raiders will look to be competitive in the AFC West. A few players on the team will be important in determining their success.
Let’s look at three players who could be under-the-radar X-factors for the Raiders on offense.
Left tackle Kolton Miller -- Left tackle is one of the most important positions for any football team, as that is the lineman who blocks the quarterback’s blind side.
Miller has improved each season and developed into a quality starter. As the Raiders plan on running it back with the same offensive line unit as last season, Miller, the longest-tenured player on the line, can be the one to set the tone for not only the offensive line but for the entire offense.
Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers -- The Raiders let Mack Hollins walk in free agency but signed a solid receiver in Meyers to fill the void.
Meyers went from an undrafted player a couple of years ago to a multi-million dollar potential No.2 wide receiver on the Raiders. His work ethic is unmatched and he reunites with McDaniels, an opportunity he cherishes.
Meyers gives the Raiders a reliable option at wide receiver beyond Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow. If he continues to improve as he has over the last couple of seasons, the Raiders might win more games than they expect to.
Tight end Austin Hooper -- Hooper has not been the same player in the last couple of years as a Pro Bowler with the Atlanta Falcons, but he can still be a solid contributor for a Raiders’ offense that needs production from its tight ends.
While rookie Michael Mayer figures to be the long-term option for the Raiders at tight end, Hooper can still spell him and provide solid depth. The Raiders will need as many capable pass catchers as possible in their offense this season.
